Nathaniel Treadway was born 07 August 1615 in Semley, Co. Wiltshire, England, the son of Nathaniel Tredway and Mary Howe. Nathaniel, Sr. was born ca 1590 and baptized on 10 January 1590/91 in Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England the son of Walteri (Walter) Tredway and Margerie Clark. Walter and Margerie were married on 25 May 1580, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. Their children were: Winifred, b: 1581, married Henry Priest, Aquila b: 1585, d: 1597, Anna b: 1587, Nathaniel b: 1590, Mary b: 1593, married Robert Burte, and Hugo b: 1595, all in Amersham, Co., Buckinghamshire, England. It is not clear who Walters father was. The Tredway lines were in Co. Buckinghamshire, England before 1522. Mary Howe was baptized at Boxted, Co. Essex., England on 23 Jan 1591/2, the daughter of Edward and Ann (Lumpkin) Howe. Mary was the sister of Edward Howe of Massachusetts. Edward and his wife Margaret both left part of their estates to Nathaniel Treadway, which led some to jump to the conclusion that his wife must be a Howe.
It appears that Nathaniel, Jr. may have been among the first Tredway/Treadway’s to have settled in the New Colonies. Many Treadway lines have descended from him. Nathaniel, Jr. emigrated to Sudbury, Midddlesex Co., Massachusetts in 1638 aboard the “Confidence” sailing from Semley, Co. Wiltshire, England. Nathaniel later relocated to Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts ca 1645. He married Sufferance Haynes ca 1639. Sufferance was born 11 September 1620 in Shaston, Co. Dorset, England to Walter Haynes and Elizabeth Gourd. Many people had thought that Sufferance was the daughter of an Edward Howe, but the Estate records of Walter Haynes (Middlesex South Probate records) dated 25 May 1659, proved 04 April 1665, lists his daughter Sufferany Traddoway. The Haynes family immigrated to the New Colony of Massachusetts aboard the “Confidence” in 1638. Nathaniel’s uncle Edward Howe left him real and personal property in his will probated in 1644 . Looking at the will, Edward and his wife show no issue, and also leaves part of his estate to Ann Treadway Stone (Nathaniel’s sister) and wife of John Stone.
Nathaniel was a prominent man; a weaver by trade. The other hats he wore were selectman, highway surveyor, and a member of the meeting house. Nathaniel died on 15 June 1689 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts (8), and Sufferance died on 22 July 1682 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts (9). His right was purchased by Josiah and John Haynes, Thomas Noyes, and Nathaniel Treadaway ; and in 1664 the} r became proprietors of a large tract east of Qninsigamond Pond. Haynes, Treadaway, and Noyes petitioned the General Court for a committee “to view the country.” The death of Mr. Noyes, and the disturbed condition of things, prevented the commissioners whom the Court appointed from carrying out the order. But, in 1667, the Court again took measures towards a settlement of the country, and appointed a committee, who state in their report that ” about five thousand acres is laid out to particular persons, and confirmed by this Court, as we are informed, which falls within this tract of land, viz., to Ensign Noyes, deceased, his brother three thousand two hundred acres, unto the church at Maiden one thousand acres, and others five hundred acres bought of Ensign Noyes…
