Family of Nancy Treadway (of Moses, John, Richard, Richard)

Nancy Treadway born in 1804 in Montgomery Co., Kentucky (tentative). Note: It is not a proven fact that Nancy is the daughter of Moses and Catey, it is just circumstantial. Moses and Catey had 3 female children born between 1800-1810, of which Nancy fits, and secondly a Catherine Treadway born in 1775 was living in her household, which could mean she is her mother. Nancy married Thomas Bennett. Thomas was born in 1803 in Kentucky, the son of Thomas Bennett and Elizabeth Proctor. They were listed in the 1830 Estill Co., Kentucky Census with 1 male 20-29, 2 females under 5, 1 female 15-19, and 1 female 20-29, the 1840 Estill Co., Kentucky Census with 2 males under 2, 1 male 30-39, 2 females under 5, 1 female 6-9, 2 females 10-14, 1 female 30-39, and the 1850 and 1860 Estill Co., Kentucky Census, and the 1870 Irvine, Estill Co., Kentucky Census records. Thomas married secondly to Armina Barrett on 14 December 1892 in Lee Co., Kentucky. Armina was born in January 1865 in Kentucky, the daughter of John Barrett and Ann Couch. Armina had two sons before her marriage to Thomas. Their family was listed in the 1900 Thomas, Lee Co., Kentucky Census records. Thomas died on 15 February 1902 and is buried in the Cable Cemetery, Big Andy, Lee Co., Kentucky. Thomas and Armina had one daughter together. She was:

8. Helen Treadway, b: 18 Jan 1895, Bath Co., KY

Rootsweb List – Harold Damron re: Thomas J.’s parentage:  The reconstructed marriage records of Owsley County, KY (the original records were destroyed in a courthouse fire) list Thomas Jefferson marrying Demanda Lutes in 1845. Thomas Jefferson’s parents are listed as Moses and Mary Catherine.

A lawsuit was filed in Powell County, KY by one Anderson Pigg shortly after Moses’ death. The suit alleged that Pigg purchased land from Moses before he died and that he, not Moses’ heirs, was entitled to it. The judge summoned all of the heirs, including one “Thomas” of Owsley County. The 1850 census lists three Treadways in Owsley County, including one “Thomas” with a wife, Demanda. The 1853 Owsley County tax records indicate one “Thos J”.

Family of Lewis Treadway (of William, John, Richard, Richard)

Lewis Treadway born 1809 in Kentucky. Many lines have Lewis down as the son of Moses Treadway and Catey DeWitt, but looking at the 1810 and 1820 Census records for Moses, there is not a male in Lewis’ age range at all. It appears that Lewis was married twice, firstly to Margaret Boatman on 15 Mar 1830.  I have no further information on Margaret, but I do believe that due to their marriage date, Nancy is probably their daughter (not proven):

  1. Nancy Jane Treadway, b: 1831, Sullivan Co., IN, married John S. Tewalt on 02 Aug 1866, Sullivan Co., IN.  John b: 1841, IN

Lewis married secondly to Rebecca Ann Mason Bedwell.  Rebecca was born in 1814 in Kentucky.  Many believe she was the daughter of Andrew Mason and Sarah Sandusky.   After looking at the info on Andrew, I believe this as well.  Rebecca had siblings named: Samuel, John, James, and Jacob P. which mirror her children’s names.  Lewis was  listed in the 1830 Jessamine Co., Kentucky Census with 1 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, and 1 female 15-19, the 1840 Sullivan Co., Indiana Census with 1 male under 5 1 male 5-9, 1 male 30-39, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, and 1 female 20-29, and the 1850 Gill, Sullivan Co., Indiana Census records. He is buried in the Lackey Cemetery, Crawford Co., Indiana. I have no other information on Lewis or Rebecca except for their children. They were:

2. Samuel Treadway, b: 1835, Sullivan Co., IN
3. Cynthia Ann Treadway, b: 14 Sept 1837, Sullivan Co., IN
4. Jacob Paul Treadway, b: 1839, Sullivan Co., IN

10. Newton Treadway, b: 23 Jan 1855, Sullivan Co., IN

Family of Matilda Treadway (of William, John, Richard, Richard)

Matilda Treadway born 1811 in Kentucky, married twice. She married firstly to Daniel Walters on 20 May 1829. Matilda married secondly to Harrison Holliday.  Harrison was born in 1810 in Kentucky.  This is all the information I have on Matilda.  Harrison remarried 1868.

Phoebe was born in 1825 in North Carolina, the daughter of Jeremiah Gulledge and Phoebe Sellers. Phoebe was married previously to William J. Griggs. Phoebe’s children: Virginia (Eugenia) and William Griggs went by Treadaway in the 1870 Census (Thank you Claudia). John and Phoebe were listed in the 1870 Gulledge Twp., Anson Co., North Carolina Census. They must have separated as John was listed lastly in the 1880 Lanesboro, Anson Co., North Carolina Census without Phoebe. Phoebe died in 1892 and her headstone reads Griggs.

Family of Richard Randall Treadaway (of Richard, Daniel, Richard, Richard)

Richard Randall Treadaway born 1801 in Anson Co., North Carolina, married Susan Dunn ca 1826 in Anson Co., North Carolina. Susan was born in 1807 in North Carolina. Family of William Treadaway (of Richard, Daniel, Richard, Richard)

William Treadaway born 1806 in Anson Co., North Carolina. He married Martha Patsy Vick (Note, Martha’s maiden name was said to have been Brown, but on Harriet, Edmond, and John Robert’s death certificates, they all state their mothers maiden name as Vick). Martha was born ca 1815 in North Carolina. William and part of his family: Martha, Frances M. and Louisa E. were listed in the 1850 Smith’s District, Anson Co., North Carolina Census records in household 503, but, the rest of his children: James, Harriet, Lucy, Martha, Edmond and John were living with William’s sister Harriet DeBerry in household 515. Does anyone know why? William is said to have died in 1859. Martha was then listed in the 1860 Beverly District, Anson Co., North Carolina Census records with the children that were living with Harriet DeBerry. The one connect that ties them together is that the Early Anson Co., North Carolina marriage records states that James Treadaway, son of William and Martha married Martha McCoy, widow. Martha was next listed in the 1870 Wadesboro, Anson Co., North Carolina Census records. Their children were:

1. James Treadaway, b: 24 Apr 1833, Anson Co., NC

8. John Robert Treadaway, b: 10 May 1854, Anson Co., NC

Family of Harriet Jane Treadaway (of Richard, Daniel, Richard, Richard)

Harriet Jane Treadaway born in 1818 in Anson Co., North Carolina, married Henry Winston DeBerry. Henry was born on 22 February 1814 in North Carolina. They were listed in the 1850 Anson Co., North Carolina Census records with her nieces and nephews living with them, and the 1860 Lilesville, Anson Co., North Carolina Census. Henry was listed with his family in the 1870 Morven Twp., Anson Co., North Carolina Census records. 9. Minnie DeBerry, b: 1856, Anson Co., NC

Family of Lewis Langford Treadaway (of Richard, Daniel, Richard, Richard)

Lewis Langford Treadaway born 09 November 1819 in Anson Co., North Carolina, married Louisa Catherine Gray on 17 March 1842. Louisa was born 25 August 1825 in North Carolina, the daughter of Jeremiah Gray and Mariah Haire. I now have Lewis as the child of Richard. My reasoning is this: Richard had 3 males under 5 in the 1820 Census, 1 male 10 – 15 in the 1830 Census, and I believe Lewis was the 20-30 year old male living with his brother William in the 1840 Census records. Plus the fact that there were no other 20-30 year old males living with any other Treadaway’s in Anson Co. at that time, and Lewis was not yet listed on his own. This is not proof positive. Lewis was a Railroad Contractor and a Farmer, and was a member of the 43rd Regiment Co. H, of the North Carolina Fisher Light Infantry. They were listed in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Wadesboro, Anson Co., North Carolina Census. Louisa was listed in the 1900 and 1910 Wadesboro, Anson Co., North Carolina Census records. In the 1900 and 1910 Census records, Louisa stated she was the mother of 7 children. Lewis died on 29 August 1881, and Louisa died on 30 May 1910. They both are buried in the Gray Cemetery, Wadesboro, Anson Co., North Carolina. Thank you for the information on this family, and the children of this family Mark Treadaway. Their children were:

1. James Alexander Treadaway, b: 1842, Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC. He was a member of the 43rd Regiment Co. H, North Carolina Fisher Light Infantry. James died on 15 Oct 1863 of dysentery resulting from complications of wounds received at Gettysburg Pennsylvania, resulting in left leg amputation. He died at General Hospital Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War.  He is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia.  Thank you Mark Treadaway for this information.
2. Roxanne C. “Roxey” Treadaway, b: 28 Feb 1844, Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC
3. Zachary Taylor Treadaway, b: 21 May 1847, Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC
4. John Milton “Milton” Treadaway, b: 01 Jun 1849, Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC
5. Rosella Albertine “Rosa” Treadaway, b: 04 Sep 1850, Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC
6. Patrick Gray Treadaway, b: 18 Nov 1853, Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC
7. Child (?), b: Unknown, Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC

From the Anson Times, Wadesboro, Anson Co., North Carolina:  On Friday last, while leaving the depot with a load of lumber, Mr. Lankford L. Treadaway met with a severe accident that cost him his life. It seems that the wagon had been loaded, a negro boy was driving, and Mr. Treadaway was seated upon the top of the lumber. The boy was just driving over the Cheraw Railroad track, when an engine was steaming up from the depot. The mules, seeing the engine, became frightened, and turning round began to run away. The boy jumped off, and Mr. Treadaway undertook to do so too, but fell and one leg resting on the railroad bar, the wagon wheel ran over it, breaking the thigh bone midway between the knee and hip. He was taken home nearby, and medical aid summoned immediately. Being an old man, the shock was more than he could stand. He fell into a comatose state that night and remained so until his death which occurred Monday morning. In this their great bereavement the family have the sympathy of our entire community.

Mary and her children except for Francis were listed in the 1860 Fayette Co., Alabama Census records. Mary died on 27 August 1885, and is buried in the Turkey Nest Hill Cemetery, Walker Co., Alabama (Thank you for Mary’s information John Hudson). Moses and Mary’s children were:

Mary was born in 1820 in Anson Co., North Carolina, the daughter of John and Thesa Stegall. John was the brother of Elizabeth Stegall who married Moses Treadway, Sr. Family tradition states that Moses and Mary lived in Alabama for about 3 years and then came back to North Carolina. Note: I had changed Loyd to the son of Daniel per advice of another researcher, however, his dates do not match up for William so please be wary.
