Richard Treadway the ascendant of this line was born ca 1677 unknown (some state Chalfont, St. Peter, Co. Buckinghamshire, England, but I have not been able to find him in the records as of yet). Richard was among the first settlers of what is now Baltimore Co., Maryland, ca 1701, according William T. Treadway’s “History of the Treadway Family.” Richard married Jane ____, widow of John Parker on 17 Dec 1705, Maryland. It appears that Jane may have been Jane Isabella or Isabella Jane (see below). She married three times; first to Thomas Smith, second to John Parker and third to Richard Treadway. Richard was listed in the 1701-1704 North Side, Gun Powder Hundred, Baltimore Co., Maryland Early Tax List records, and the 1705 and 1706 Spesutia Hundred, Baltimore Co., Maryland Early Tax List records.
In June of 1714 Richard petitioned the court that he was a poor man with three small children. Richard died on 13 May 1720. Jane was paid one year’s wages from the Estate of George Wells. Jane was a witness to Susanna Arnold’s Will, Spesuty Hundred, Balto. Co., 22nd Sept., 1706; 4th Jan., 1708-09. Jane died on 15 Jan 1720/21. Her Estate was inventoried on 22 Apr 1721 by and J. Moulton, signed by Timothy Keen as one of the creditors. Richard and Jane’s children; Richard, Mary and Thomas were bound to Antil Deaver in 1720/21. Antil Deaver was also present and signed his mark on Thomas’s Will. Richard and Jane’s children were:

From Janet Barnhill: Thomas Smith was in Baltimore Co., Maryland by 18 March 1688/9 when Thomas Richardson assigned him a certificate of survey. Smith laid out 100 a., Smith’s Beginning (Baltimore Co. Land Records RM#HS:422). Thomas Smith and his wife Isabella conveyed the 100 a. to Robert Benger on 6 June 1693 (Baltimore Co. Land Records SM#HS:381). John Parker, Sr., of Bush River, and Isabella Smith, of Gunpowder River, widow, were married in St. George’s Parish, (now Harford Co.), on 12 Sep 1699 (PAGE:5). On 03 November 1701, Isabell Parker, wife of John Parker, administered the Estate of Thomas Smith (INAC 28:150). John Parker’s Estate was administered on 5 July 1708 by Capt. Thomas Preston and William Hicks, who also filed an additional account of Thomas Smith’s Estate on the same day (INAC 28:150, 152).
Baltimore Co., Families: Thomas Smith was in Baltimore Co., Maryland by 18 March 1688/9 when Thomas Richardson assigned him a certificate of survey. Smith laid out 100 a., Smith’s Beginning (Baltimore Co. Land Records RM#HS:422). Smith, John, son of Jane , now w. of Richard Treadway, was age 13 “last 9 Jan,” in June 1713 was bound to Aquila Paca, Gent., to age 21 (129:212).

Richard Treadway born 08 December 1706 in St. George’s Parish, Baltimore Co., Maryland (2), married twice. Richard married firstly to Martha _____ (2). Claudia Angel believes that Richard married Martha Fountaine, the daughter of Rev. Peter Fountaine. However, Ron Kovalak has done extensive research on Rev. Peter Fountain. He states Peter’s daughter was Mary Anne (born in 1718), not Martha and that Martha could not possibly be his daughter (Thank you Ron). Please update your records (5). Richard probably migrated to Virginia around 1736/37 after his transfer of Estate to Aquila Paca was made. Please note that Richard and his children went by the name of Treadaway. Richard and Martha’s children were:

Richard married secondly to Elizabeth Cole. Richard was the overseer to John Cole’s plantation. He migrated to Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, and then to Cumberland Co., North Carolina ca 1756, where he lived the remainder of his life, except for a visit to his son Daniel’s home in Anson Co., North Carolina, where he died ca 1777, leaving a Will that was probated on 30 October 1774 in which he names his wife Elizabeth and his children (6). Richard is said to be buried in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. Richard and Elizabeth’s children were:

Supreme Court Records of Baltimore City, Baltimore Co., Maryland: Know all men by these presents, that I Richard Treadway of Baltimore County in the Province of Maryland, Planter, for and in consideration of the sum or quantity of six hundred and seventy seven pounds of tobacco, and six barrels of Indian corn justly due and owing unto Aquila Paca of the County aforesaid, have bargained sold made over and delivered unto said Aquila Paca, all my share or third part of tobacco, and fourth part of the corn which I made on the said Aquila Paca’s Forest Quarter, with the assistance of his two negroes in the year 1736, which is still remaining on the said Plantation; all of which share or one third of tobacco and one fourth of corn as aforesaid is my own right; and is not transferred or disposed of to any other person whatsoever, but do herby for myself, my heirs, executors and assigns make over, transfer and deliver unto the said Aquila Paca, his heirs and assigns, all my right title claim and interest of and to my assigns share of tobacco and corn above mentioned and to and for the proper use and benefit and advantage of him the said Aquila Paca, his heirs and assigns forever and do hereby for myself, my heirs and warrant and defend aforesaid tobacco and corn and every part thereof from all manner of persons whatsoever pretending any right or claim thereto as Witness my hand and seal this second day of November Anno Domini 1736. Family of Mary Treadway (of Richard)
Mary Treadway born 12 January 1709, St. George’s Parish, Baltimore Co., Maryland (2), married John Brown. John may have been the John Brown that was born ca 1707, son of Zachariah Brown. At the time of Zachariah’s death in 1711, John Deaver signed as kin in the records of Baltimore County. At the age of 12, John was bound to Richard Deaver until he was 21. This John married a Mary ____ (Baltimore Co. Families). Mary died prior to November 1742, as her husband John died in November of 1742 and their son Thomas was listed as an orphan in November 1742 at the age of six when he was bound to Richard Ruff (8) Children:

Note: The book “Baltimore County Families” lists a John Brown’s (son of Zachariah) family as: Mary _____ his wife, and his children: Zachariah, b: 1728, John, b: 1729/30, Elizabeth; who died in 1740, and Sarah. The book also mentions only one child of John’s being bound out and that was John, Jr. who went to Daniel Ruff in 1740. The book later (not listed in Zachariah’s family) shows a Thomas Brown, son of John Brown being bound to Richard Ruff in 1742. If this is truly one family then Mary may have died ca 1740, which explains the reason why John was bound out as he was twelve. Then when John, Sr. died Thomas was bound out.

Family of Thomas Treadway (of Richard)
Thomas Treadway born 06 March 1711 in St. George’s Parish, Baltimore Co., Maryland (2). Thomas died in 1749, Baltimore Co., Maryland where he left a Will dated 21 July 1749-02 August 1749. In this Will he provided for his cousin “nephew” Thomas Brown, and named his trusted and beloved friend Thomas Tredway his administrator, showing he had no wife or children. He also mentions Mary Tredway Cunningham daughter of Thomas Tredway. Bond was posted 02 August 1749, by Executor Thomas Tredway, with Amos Garrett and and Abraham Taylor (9). Please note that many people get this Thomas Tredway the son of Richard and the Thomas Tredway of Baltimore/Harford Co., Maryland confused with each other. Richard Treadaway born 25 February 1734/35 in St. George’s Parish, Baltimore Co., Maryland (10), married Mary _____ (possibly Green). Mary was born ca 1739 in Harford Co., Maryland. Richard and Mary migrated to Winton/Barnwell Co., South Carolina. Richard was a Private in the State Militia from 14 April 1781 to February 1782. He received £40 Sterling for his service, Records AA.7886;X660. Richard was a large land owner in Winton/Barnwell Co., South Carolina, with land bordering on the Upper Three Runs Creek, Tinker Creek, and Hollow Creek. Their family was listed in the 1790 Orangeburg Co., South Carolina with 3 males , females (pg. 258, line 32) (11), and the 1800 Barnwell Co., South Carolina with 3 males under 10, 1 male 45+, 3 females 10-15, 1 female 45+ (pg. 50, line 12) (12). Family of Moses Treadway (of Richard, Richard)
Moses TreadwayTreadaway born 1739 in St. George’s Parish, Baltimore Co., Maryland, married ______. According to a post by Jason Bordeaux in GenForum, Moses probably married a daughter of Alexander Bordeaux (14)….Moses was listed in the 1774, 1776, 1778, and 1779 Bladen Co., North Carolina tax list records. He also was listed twice as a signer to have Bladen, New Hanover and Duplin counties in North Carolina divided up to make a new county in 1779/80 (14). Moses was listed in the 1790 New Hanover Co., North Carolina with 1 male under 16, 1 male over 16, and 7 females (pg. 51, line 3) (15). According to Jason’s post, Moses owned 112 acres of land located on the Black river which he sold to James Bordeaux, and 190 acres of land located on Buckle Swamp which he sold to Isaac Bordeaux. Moses also sold a large share of his estate to Daniel Bordeaux in 1793. Moses was dead by 1797 as he was mentioned when a sheriff sold his interest of a slave who belonged to Moses Treadway deceased to Daniel Bordeaux. The selling of his lands in 1791 and 1792 and what appears to be most of his personal estate in 1793 seems to indicate that Moses son listed in the 1790 Census records had passed as well as his wife, but there is no definitive proof; or did Moses migrate elsewhere before his passing? (14). I do not have the names of any of Moses Treadway’s children.

Family of John Treadway (of Richard, Richard)
John Treadway born ca 1741 (1740-1750 Per 1830 Census) in Charlotte Co., Virginia, married Winifred Wise. Winifred was born ca 1744 in Virginia. John lived in Fayette Co., Jessamine, Clark, and Montgomery Counties in Kentucky. John along with John Waters received a land grant for one hundred and sixty-one acres in Fayette Co., Kentucky on 24 January 1786 (16). Note that Jessamine County was part of Fayette County before it was formed. The 1790 and 1800 Census records for Kentucky were burned by the British in the War of 1812 (17). John was listed in the 1800 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Tax List. John was listed in the 1810 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Census with 1 male 45+, 3 females under 10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44, and 1 female 45+ (pg. 258, line 2) (18). Winnifred died after the 1810 Census as John was listed in the 1820 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Census with 1 male 45+, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female 26-44 (19). John was lastly listed in the 1830 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Census records with 1 male 80-90, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-29, and 1 female 40-49 (20). John’s Will was made on 15 Jul 1825 (21), and it is said that he died ca 1832 in Montgomery Co. Kentucky. Many thanks to Ron Grabyan for his info on this family. Their children were:

Daniel Treadway born 1752 (23), Baltimore Co., Maryland, married Mary Jones on 08 Aug 1776 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. Mary was born 1755 of Cumberland Co., North Carolina (23). Daniel was a soldier in the Militia Horse Company during the Revolutionary War and was stationed at Fayetteville, North Carolina (23). Their family was listed in the 1790 Richmond Co., North Carolina Census with 3 males under 16, 1 male over 16, 4 females (pg. 84, line 15) (24), the 1800 Fayetteville, Anson Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 16-25, 1 female 45+ (pg. 204, line 6) (25), and the 1820 Steagall, Anson Co., North Carolina Census records with 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 16-25, 1 female 45+ (pg. 19+, line 8) (26). Daniel died 27 September 1824 in the settlement of the Threadgills in Anson Co., North Carolina (23). Mary was probably the 70-79 year old female living with Arthur in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census (pg. 219, line 9) (27), and the 80-89 year old female living with Arthur in the 1840 Henderson Co., North Carolina Census (pg. 143, line 13) (28). Mary was listed in the 1840 Henderson Co., North Carolina Veterans Pensioner list (29). Mary died on 20 Aug 1844, and is buried in the Ebenezer Church Cemetery, Hendersonville, Henderson Co., North Carolina (30). Please note: Many believe that Daniel was the son of William, while others believe he is the son of Richard. Daniel and Mary’s children’s names and birth dates were from Mary’s pension application. In those papers she mentioned her brother Jacob Jones. Their children were: (23)

Daniel Treadaway born 1758 possibly in South Carolina (31), married Mary Buffington. Mary was born 1760 in South Carolina, most likely at Turkey Point, Barnwell Co., South Carolina, the daughter of Ezekial Buffington (31) Daniel was a Private in the Revolutionary War from 15 April 1781 to February 1782, Record numbers A.A.7902;W5. For this service, he received £20 with a stipulation that £1 would be set aside for his heirs who could receive the interest (31). It was stated in the autobiography of his Grandson Francis Marion Treadway that Daniel had 2 horses shot from under him at the Siege of Augusta, Georgia. Daniel obtained a land grant for 150 acres on 01 May 1786 in Barnwell Co., South Carolina. Their family was listed in the 1790 Orangeburg Co., South Carolina with 2 males under 16, 1 male over 16, 3 females (pg. 261, line 34) (11). Deed records show sales by Daniel of 300 acres in Barnwell County (100 acres on Upper Three Runs on 29 January 1801; 100 acres on Tinkers Creek on 29 Jan 1801; 100 acres on Turkey Creek on 28 January 1801). Pendelton County Deeds, pgs. 480-481 lists Daniel Tredaway as surveyor and William Tredaway as witness; surveying 07 February 1793; witnessing 19 Jan 1803 (31)….Pendleton Co., South Carolina Deeds, pgs. 132-133 states that on 23 Feb 1801, Ezekiel Buffington (Daniel’s father-in-law) and Ellis Harlan sold to Daniel Treadaway for $171.00, 150 acres on NE side of Little River of the Keowee River. Land transactions for Daniel in Pendelton District (Anderson County records): 150 acres bought on Little Run on 07 Feb 1805; 100 acres sold on Little Creek on 24 March 1813; 150 acres sold on Little Creek on 07 Oct 1816. Mary was listed in the 1850 East Armuchee, Walker Co., Georgia, living with her son Ellis and his family. Mary died in Walker Co., Georgia while living with her son Ellis (31). Daniel and Mary’s children were:

Elijah Treadaway born ca 1760 possibly in South Carolina (32), married Mary Wilson. Mary was born in 1764 in Barnwell Co., South Carolina. This was a notice in the Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle dated 03 Mar 1798, pg. 2, column 3. I do hereby forewarn all persons from trafficking, trading, or dealing with my wife Mary Tredaway, for I will not pay any of her contracts; likewise I forewarn all persons from entertaining the said Mary Tredaway for any longer time than twenty-four hours, as she absconded my bed and board in the night of the 24th instant without any cause; and any person entertaining her as aforesaid over the above term may expect to suffer the penalty of the law. Note that the grant papers after 1791 are for “unused land” and were at no cost to the recipient. In 1801 Elijah sold a parcel of land Barnwell County Land Deed, Volume B, pg 103, in which his wife Mary C. Treadway appeared before magistrate and gave up her rights to property. From the book “South Carolina Baptists, 1670-1805” pg, 196, footnote 59, extracted from the Charleston Association Minutes, 1802: “Bethesda Baptist Church is now known as Treadway Church, Elijah Treadway on 20 January 1810, having conveyed 4 acres to Upper 3 Runs Church on west side of Runs as a lot for a meeting house (Aiken County CC, Deeds E, pg. 409); the church is located near Hawthorne, northwest of Upper 3 Runs and about 10 miles from the Savannah River.” [Note that Aiken County did not exist at this time, and the deed may be found in the SC Archives and the Barnwell County Courthouse.] (31)….In 1826, Elijah deeded land to Woolley grandchildren (of daughter Elizabeth). Barnwell land deed records Vol Q, pg 350, show that he signed the deed on 06 Jan 1826, and that it was not recorded until 12 Nov 1839. The grandchildren re-sold the land on 02 Aug 1840, recorded on 29 Dec 1840 for $300.00 (31)….. The deed mentions that the property extends from the Treadway Bridge (over Upper 3 Runs) along the Augusta Road. John Treadway, Dr., born 18 May 1769 in Virginia (36), married Elizabeth Griffin. Elizabeth was born 23 June 1773 in Virginia the daughter of Richard Griffin and Mary Brown (37). John was listed in the 1793 -1796 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Tax Lists, and also the 1800 Tax List. The 1790 and 1800 Census records for Kentucky were burned by the British in the War of 1812 (17). Their family was listed in the 1810 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Census with 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 2 males 45+, 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-25 and 1 female 45+ (pg. 35, line 5) (18), the 1820 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Census with 4 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 45+ (pg. 289, line 19) (19), and the 1830 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Census records with 1 male 5-9, 2 males 10-14, 2 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 male 60-69, 1 female 15-19, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 50-59 (pg. 46, line 11) (20). John died on 24 May 1839 in German Twp, Bartholomew Co., Indiana, and is buried in the Treadway Cemetery, Bartholomew Co., Indiana (36) located on his farm. John left a Will dated 1836 in which he names his wife Elizabeth and his children (38). Elizabeth was listed in the 1840 German, Bartholomew Co., Indiana living with her son Franklin as the head of household and the rest of her children (pg. 74, line 5) (39). Elizabeth was lastly listed in the 1850 German, Bartholomew Co., Indiana Census records, living with her son Franklin and his family (pg. 433b, household 897) (40). Elizabeth died 16 May 1857 in Calumet Twp., Pike Co., Missouri at the home of her son Washington Treadway, and is buried in the MacDannold Cemetery, Pike Co., Missouri (37). Mary was born ca 1775 (1766-1784 per 1810 Census), the daughter of Peter DeWitt and Jane Bray. Moses was listed in the 1795 and 1796 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Tax Lists, and also in the 1800 Clark Co., Kentucky Tax List (Thank you Ron Grabyan). The 1790 and 1800 Census records for Kentucky were burned by the British in the War of 1812 (17). Their family was listed in the 1810 Clark Co., Kentucky Census with 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 3 females under 10, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female 26-44 (pg. 646, line 3) (44), the 1820 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Census with 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45+, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-15, 2 females 16-25, and 1 female 26-44 (pg. 291, line 24) (19). It seems that Moses may have passed after that Census as I was unable to find him. Catey was probably the 50-59 year old female living with her son William Walton in the 1830 Clay Co., Kentucky Census (pg. 168, line 11) (45). And she was probably the 60-69 year old female living with her son William Walton in the 1840 Clay Co., Kentucky Census: 315b, line 18 (46). Catey was living with her daughter Nancy Bennett and her family in the 1850 Estill Co., Kentucky Census: Catherine; 75, NC (pg. 54b, household 117) (47). She was lastly listed as living with her son William Walton in the 1860 Owsley Co., Kentucky Census records: Catherine; 85, MD (pg. 325, household 193) (48). Moses and Mary’s children were:

Mary was born ca 1784 (1785-1794 per 1810 Census), in Pennsylvania, the daughter of William Thornton and Sarah Allison (49). Their family was listed in the 1810 Montgomery Co., Kentucky Census records with 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, and 1 female 16-25 (pg. 260, line 8) (18). Their children were (Thank you James):
