Declaration of Mary Treadway in order to obtain wages of Pension

State of North Carolina
Anson County

On this 16th day of September 1837, Personally appeared before me Andrew Polk acting Justice of the Peace in & for the aforesaid County Mary Treadway 82 years of age who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Provision made by the act of Congress passed July the 4th 1836, that she is the widow of Daniel Treadway deceased who was a Soldier of the United States in the Revolutionary War who died the 27th day of September 1824, and her husband has often told her he was three years older than herself. When she was married she resided in Cumberland County North Carolina on Little River running into Cape Fear not fair from Fayetteville. She was married by David Smith who resided on Cape Fear river not fair above Fayetteville on the 8th day of August 1776, she believes it to be the forepart of the War. Daniel Treadway at the time of their marriage was a soldier & belonged to the Militia Horse Company Stationed in Fayetteville & to the best of her recollection she was informed by her husband before the Company left the town her husband was employed by some of the Officers the names she does not recollect for the purpose of recruiting men for the service & continued there in that service to the Spring of the year 1778, he then moved to South Carolina to her brothers near Broad River & after being there a short time he went into the service of the country again. She recollects her husband hired her brother Jacob Jones as substitute who was in the Battle at Brier Creek. She recollects hearing her husband state that he was in service at the Siege of Augustia. His officers names in North or South Carolina or the length of his service in either State she has no recollection of at this time. She thinks in the Spring of the year after the close of the War her husband moved to Anson County North Carolina in the Settlement of the Threadgills & resided in the said County to the day of his death. She has no written evidence to prove the services of her husband & knows of no person by whom she could or otherwise.

Her husband kept a record in an old Prayer Book of his Childrens names and ages the following is as far as can now be understood,

Richard Treadway son of Daniel Treadway & Mary his wife was born on the 13th day of September in the year of our Lord 1777

The applicant further States that she does not know that her husband was ever on the Pension roll of the State or the United States & that she has remained a Widow ever since the death of her husband that she lives fifteen miles from the Court House & so infirm she could not be carried to the Court without Pane to herself that she is supported by the County she thinks eight years.
