Walterus “Walter” Tredway born unknown in England. He was of Agmondesham (later known as Amersham), Co. Buckinghamshire, England at the time of his passing. Walter was married to Isabel _____. Walter left a Will dated 1546 and probated in 1559; calling himself “Yeoman” (a man holding and cultivating a small landed estate; a freeholder). In that Will he named his wife; Isabel, his father-in-law; Thomas Duncombe, and his children (1). Walter’s Will also stated that he had copyholds and leases in Rickmansworth, Co. Hertfordshire, England as well as Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England (Coleshill) and Little Missenden. Walter was listed as “Churchwarden” of Amersham in 1520 (3). Walter was listed in the 1522 Co. Buckinghamshire, England Certificate of Musters, Amersham/Agondesham. The Certificate of Musters were used for taxation and military preparedness per King Henry VIII. Walter asked to be buried at the Church of Agmondesham (1). Walter’s children were: (2)

The Houses of Coleshill – Stockings: Two leases, one of them for 90 years enabled three generations of Tredway’s to hold Stockings. In the third Walter Tredway, living in Windsor, assigned the lease (4).
The Houses of Coleshill – Stockings: Larkins Green…Documentary evidence supports a date consistent with these ideas. The house is built on a wedge of land cut off the side of a large field now called Chapel Field, but earlier known as Horse Leys. It was part of the demesne of Amersham Stockbury; the amputation had certainly taken place before 1637, and possibly before 1625. At that date 54 acres of his part of the demesne were sold; the four fields concerned abut Horse Leys to the south. They already formed an agricultural unit distinct from the rest of the demesne (which was to become the land of Ongar Hill Farm): Walter Tredway, tenant of Coleshill Manor (Stock Place) in the early sixteenth century, had also a lease of this land. During his tenancy there would have been no need for a farmhouse there, but on his death, between 1546 and 1549, when Edmund Waller took the manor, the need for a house at Larkins Green would have been felt at once (4).
Family of Robert Tredway (of Walter, Thomas)
Robert Tredway born unknown, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. Robert was left his fathers copyhold land (land held from a manor) and leases located in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England, and Coleshill, among others (4). Robert appears to be the father of Henry Tredway mentioned in the Houses of Coleshill snippit above in Walter Tredway’s family information(4).

2. John Tredway, b: ca 1563, Amershham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England, baptized: 04 Jul 1563, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England
Family of Richard Tredway (of Walter, Thomas)
Richard Tredway born unknown, Co. Buckinghamshire, England, of Agmondesham/Amersham and Hardwick, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. Richard married Margaret Thiede, the daughter of John Thiede. Richard was granted a tenement at Coleshill, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. In his fathers Will (2). Richard died ca 1557 as his Will was proved on 23 Mar 1557/8 in Co. Buckinghamshire, England calling himself husbandman (cultivator/farmer). In that Will, Richard names his wife Margaret and son John (5), and mentioned in the below snippet: (6).
1. John Tredway, b: Unknown, England
British History Online – Grants of Tenements in Grey Friars, 22 Jun 1542: Richard Tredwaye, three tenements. His tenements were on the north of the Little Cloister (see p. 230 below). The St. Bartholomew’s “Repertory Book” speaks of: “One nether lodging with a little hall and two chambers, one buttery, coal-house, and kitchen, and parcel of void ground between the lodging and London Wall in the tenure of Richard Tredwaye”.
Harris of Buckinghamshire, England: John Tredway was the son of Richard Tredway, gent, of whom the Duncombes were tenants: ‘Richard Tredway, gent., Edmund Waller, gent., demandants. John Duncombe, gent.,* tenant. Griffith Hampden and Ann his wife, vouchees. 1 messuage, 1 garden, 2a. pasture in Dinton’ (D-LE/1/52. November 28, 1584). (Lee family deed). *John Duncombe, great-grandfather of Anne Woodliffe, ‘kin’ of Thomas Harris. (6)
Family of Thomas Tredway, Sir (of Walter, Thomas)
Thomas Tredway, Sir was of Agmondesham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. According to William T. Tredway the author of the History of the Tredway Family Thomas married _____ Duncombe (7), the daughter of John Duncombe. The Saunders Family website states that John Saunders married Elizabeth Tredway (nee Duncombe) (8). John Duncombe mentioned Thomas in his Will probated Jan 1569. John Saunders left £20 to Elizabeth Tredway daughter of Richard Tredway of Beaconsfield, Thomasine Waller daughter of Edmund £20 and £10 to Robert Tredway in his Will, and makes Humphrey Withall?, Edmund Waller, William Smith and Richard Tredway, “sonne of his first wife” (Elizabeth) overseers to his Will (probated in 1578), and leaves Richard, £10 and the others £5.
However, with the above being stated, I have come across many genealogies listing Sir Thomas Tredway as marrying Isabel Wenman, daughter of Thomas Wenman, Esq. and Jane West. Thomas Wenman’s parents were Sir Richard Wenman and Isabel Williams. With Thomas Wenman being a lawyer as Richard Tredway, Esq. was, the names of Thomas and Elizabeth’s children were the names of Thomas Wenman’s parents, a daughter being named Isabella, and Thomas Wenman being born in Thames, Co. Oxfordshire, England (Richard Tredway going to Oxford University, and Richard’s son Walter being buried at Thames); I believe that Elizabeth was probably the daughter of Thomas Wenman and Jane West. I am not sure, but, could it be since Walter Tredway, Sr. was married to a Duncombe be the reason for the confusion? In any case, Thomas and Elizabeth’s known children were: (7).
1. Richard Tredway, Esq., b: Unknown, England
2. Robert Tredway, b: Unknown, England
3. Isabella Tredway, b: ca 1563, baptized 28 Mar 1563, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England
4. John Tredway, b: ca 1565, baptized 18 Jun 1565, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England
5. Isabella Tredway, b: ca 1571, baptized 14 Oct 1571, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England, buried: 14 Oct 1571, St. Martin, West Drayton, Co. Middlesex, England
Family of Henry Tredway (of Robert, Walter, Thomas)
Henry Tredway born unknown, possibly of Stockings Farm, Coleshill, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. Henry had a lease for two lifetimes of the Coleshill Manor House (10). It appears Henry married twice. Their children were:
1. Elizabeth Tredway, b: Unknown, England
2. Sarah Tredway, b: ca 1570, baptized 26 Dec 1570, Chalfont St. Giles, Co. Buckinghamshire, England
Henry married secondly to widow Joan Russell on 19 Nov 1584, St. Dunstan in the West, London, Co. London, England. Joan was previously married to William Russell. Henry left a Will dated 1634 (11). In that Will he also mentions 2 son in laws; Mr. Laine and William Russell, without naming his daughters. His children were:
3. Rebecca Tredway, b: ca 1587/8, baptized 09 Mar 1587/8, Chalfont St. Giles, Co. Buckinghamshire, England, married Ralph Wingfield 09 May 1611, St. Gregory By St. Paul, London, Co. London, England
4. Walter Tredway, baptized 01 Apr 1592 , Chalfont St. Giles, Co. Buckinghamshire, England, d: 1652
5. Daughter, b: Unknown, England, married William Russell

The Houses of Coleshill: – Stockings: Stockings Farm: The house at Stockings was built c.1690 – 1700. It replaced a large house, probably an improved medieval one, which in 1662/3 had six heart vs. This had been the house, at the beginning of the century, of Henry Tredway, whose grandfather had been tenant of the Coleshill manor house and demesne before the Wallers, and who claimed gentry status. He had other land elsewhere in Amersham, altogether 173 acres, all leasehold. He was, however, a working farmer, who took apprentices. Henry, who had a lease for two lives, died in 1634 and was succeeded by his son Walter, to whom a new 90 year lease was granted in 1640. (10)

1. Daughter, b: Unknown, married Thomas Starlie
2. Richard Tredway, b: Unknown

Harris of Buckinghamshire, England: John Harris was the probable father of Thomas Harris, aforementioned, and James Harris, who married ‘Luce Lucas’ on November 30, 1587, in Maids Moreton. She subsequently married John Tredway: ‘9 Sep 1601 John Tredway & Luce Harris, widow’. This family appear thus: ‘Tredway v Bunby. Plaintiffs: John Tredway. Defendants: Thomas Bunby. Subject: lands held of the manor of Cheneys, Buckinghamshire. 1603-1625′ (National Archives, reference C 2/JasI/T8/65). John Tredway was the son of Richard Tredway, gent, of whom the Duncombes were tenants…(12)
Family of Richard Tredway, Esq. (of Thomas, Walter, Thomas)
Richard Tredway, Esq. born unknown, was a barrister of the Bencher’s of the Inner Temple in London, England and a Reader of that Society in 1588 and 1597 (13). Richard was listed in the 16th Century Bucks Men at the Inner Temple, Nov 1560 of Amersham (14). Richard was also and auditor for the stewards account and treasurer of the Inner Temple. It appears that Richard married twice. He married first to ____ ____. Richard married secondly to Widow Eleanor “Ellen” Blomyre on 01 Jun 1589 in Tottenham, Co. Middlesex, England (14). Richard was named “Cozin” in Edmund Waller’s Will of 1603, along with his “Cozin” Walter. At one point Richard of Beaconsfield was listed as being presented to the church at Stoke Poges in 1592 and his son Walter in 1601(15). Richard purchased Rectory Manor (formerly belonging to Sempringham Priory) at Stoke Poges from John Chamberlayne (15) and his wife Elizabeth. Richard left a Will in 1604 in which he named his wife Ellen, his children, and the children of his late son Sir Walter Tredway. At that time Richard resided in Beaconsfield, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. Richard had copiholds and lands also in Hedgerley, Farnham-Royal, Danebury Grounds, and Monks, Co. Buckinghamshire. He also had copiholds and lands in St. Brides, London, St. Saviour, Southwark, Co. Surrey, Coldham, Co. Essex, and the Manor of Hangin Langford, Co. Wiltshire, England. (16). British History Online – Cecil Papers, 1596: A lease in reversion of the premises is offered to his Honour by Mr. Tredway, one of the ancientest seniors of the College, to show his gratitude for Cecil’s favour bestowed on his brother (Robert), Mr. Tredway of Northampton.
Beaconsfield Parish – Manors: HALL MANOR/HALL BARN: Part of the Windsors’ lands in Beaconsfield became known as HALL alias HALLAND MANOR or HALL BARN in the 16th century. It was held in the 15th century of Burnham Abbey and in the 16th of George Rotherham as of his manor of Cold Norton. The first under-tenant mentioned is John son of Ralph Loveday of Hedsor, who in 1331 settled lands in Beaconsfield on himself and wife Margaret. It was probably their son John Loveday who in 1358 granted the reversion of Hall Manor to Sir Hugh Berwick and Isabella his wife, it then being held as to two parts by Richard Gregory, jun., and the remaining third by Nichola wife of Gilbert Wace. John Loveday’s widow Cecilia put forward a claim against Sir Hugh Berwick in 1362 for a messuage and a carucate of land, &c., as dower in Beaconsfield. Sir Hugh died in 1403, and in 1410 his son Thomas Berwick enfeoffed trustees of his lands in Beaconsfield. A further settlement was made in July 1415, but he died before the following March, when his sister and heir Margaret wife of Ralph Butler of Badminton, Gloucestershire, entered into possession. The Court Rolls for this manor for 1420–3 still exist, and it appears to have been let at farm at a rent of £7 9s. 10d. John Butler, probably the son of the above, is mentioned in connexion with lands called ‘Hallemore’ in 1443. He was Sheriff for Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire in 1465 and 1472 and knight of the shire in 1467, and on his death in 1477 was succeeded by John the son of his dead son William. In 1503 a settlement was made by John Butler on the marriage of his son Ralph with Alice Baynam, and a further settlement was made in 1521 to the uses of his last will. Ralph Butler having died, the Beaconsfield and other property was settled in 1524 on Ralph’s son John on the occasion of his marriage with Silvester daughter of John Eyes. John Butler, sen., died in the following January, and his grandson John inherited the possessions. In 1545 he and his wife Silvester conveyed Hall Barn to Sir John Williams, afterwards Lord Williams of Thame. He died in 1559, leaving two daughters and co-heirs, Isabel wife of Richard Wenman and Margaret wife of Sir Henry Norreys. The latter quitclaimed their right in the manor to the former in 1561, and in 1572 the Wenmans settled the Beaconsfield estate on themselves for life, with reversion to their son and heir Thomas. Richard died in the same year, and Isabel married Richard Huddleston, and in 1577 renounced her claims on the estate to Thomas Wenman in return for an annual pension, obtained by leasing the manor for forty years to William Norreys.
A further lease to this effect was made in 1579 to Richard Tredway during the minority of Richard son and heir of Thomas Wenman, who had died in 1577. Isabel died in 1587, and Richard Wenman inherited her rights. (fn. 63) Various settlements were made of the manor, which was alienated in 1608 by Richard Wenman and his wife Agnes to Ralph Smith and Martha his wife, by whom it was conveyed in 1624 to Anne Waller, widow, and her son Edmund. The Wallers, who came from Speldhurst, Kent, were settled at Beaconsfield as early as the 14th century. John Waller, who witnessed a charter at Beaconsfield in 1471 and died in 1498, left all his lands here to his son Robert (18).
Beaconsfield Parish – Manors: GREGORY’S MANOR alias BUTLER’S COURT: Gregory’s or Butler’s Court or Place was made by Lord Williams of Thame in 1556 to his servant George Handford. After Handford’s death in 1580 his wife Cecily married Edward Dun-Lee, with whom she joined in 1584 to alienate her interest to Richard Tredway. The latter died there in 1604, and his widow Ellen carried away jewels and chattels from the house contrary to the provisos of his will. In 1624 Gregory’s Manor passed with Hall Barn to Anne and Edmund Waller, but it appears to have been acquired from them by another branch of the family, for Edmund’s cousin Thomas Waller, who in 1616 settled property in Beaconsfield on his son Edmund, and the latter’s wife, Mary Smith, died seised of it in 1627. (16).
Ellen Tredway held also lands called Askill or Dawbneys in Beaconsfield, which passed at her death in 1612 to her son William Andrews (17).
Rectory Manor, Stoke Poge, Buckinghamshire: …In 1589 Elizabeth Bowser joined with her husband John Chamberleyn in alienating to Richard Tredway in liquidation of a debt of £105. Richard’s son Sir Walter Tredway, kt., died seized in 1604, and his widow Anne held the manor by settlement for her life. She married Sir Dudley Carleton, later Viscount Dorchester, in 1607 and died in 1627. Her son Edward Tredway had died in 1615, and the manor reverted to his sisters Lettice and Elizabeth. Elizabeth proved her claim to her half in 1618 and died seized in 1634. Her husband, William Stafford, died in 1637, when their son Edward was still a minor. His brother William, next in tail-male, in 1654, with Edward Alchorne, alienated the manor to Edmund Griffith (15).
History of the Parish of Wraysbury, Ankerwycke Priory, and Magna Charta – Hornton: 02 Jul 1595: Richard Tredway, Esq. of Beaconsfield had dealings with John Chamberlayne, jun. gentleman and Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Richard Tredway were seized by virtue of the said Elizabeth in the church and advowson of Stoke Poges, and of two messauges and 7 1/2 acre of land in Colnbrook, with divers lands in Iver and Hornton (52).

Family of Richard Tredway (of John, Richard, Walter, Thomas)
Richard Tredway was born 1599, Co. Buckinghamshire, England and baptized on 24 Feb 1599, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. According to Margaret Spufford’s book “The World of Rural Dissenters, 1520-1725”, Richard married twice. He married first to Elizabeth ____. The book goes on to state he was married to an Anne, however, I could not find that information. A Richard married Elizabeth Chandler on 27 Apr 1628, Husborne Crawley, Co. Bedfordshire, England. Husborne Crawley is approximately 49 miles North of Chalfont St Peter. This may be our couple. Elizabeth was buried on 13 Jul 1643 in Chalfont St. Peter, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. Richard left a Will dated 1669 in Chalfont St. Peters, Co. Buckinghamshire, England, and listed himself as Yeoman. In that Will Richard names his son in law Thomas Parratt, and Margaret West Tredway lists Thomas Parratt as her brother in law (Elizabeth). Also note, the above book mentions that Richard is the son of Thomas. Going back to Richard’s Will, his witnesses were Ann Prince (his sister/wife of Joseph Prince?) and William Child, (his nephew/son of Isabella?”). Richard’s children were:
