     Sarah Tredway, born ca 1570, baptized 26 December 1570, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England.  She married Richard Gosnold, Gentleman, the son of Mathew Gosnold.  Their children were:

Family of Sir Walter Tredway (of Richard, ThomasWalterThomas)

     Walter Tredway, Sir, born ca 1573, baptized 13 December 1573, Amersham, Co. Buckinghamshire, England. Many publications have listed Walter as being the son of a Sir Thomas Tredway.   However, Walter was mentioned in his father Richard’s Will as: “Sir Walter Tredway knight deceased my late sonne.”  Walter was Knighted on 23 July 1603 (23) at the “ye great Knighting” before the Coronation of King James I at Whitehall Palace, in England (24). As far as I can tell Sir Walter was the true bearer of the Tredway Coat of Arms. In his Uncle Robert Tredway’s Will, Walter was left 40 shillings. Walter was of Beckley Park, Co. Oxfordshire when he passed. Walter married twice. First to Elizabeth Wenman.  Elizabeth was born daughter of Thomas Wenman and Jane West. Thomas was the son of Sir Richard Wenman and Isabella Williams and Isabella was the daughter of William West, Lord De La Warr and Elizabeth Strange. Walter and Elizabeth’s children were:

Walter married secondly to Anne Gerrard.  Anne was born in 1595 in England, the daughter of George Gerrard of Longfield, Kent and Margaret Dacres, and step daughter of Sir Henry Savile. Walter died  in January 1603/4, leaving a Will dated 1603, naming his wife Anne. his father Richard, his father in law Henry Savile and his children (25). Sir Walter was buried at St Martin, Ludgate City of London, London, England on 18 January 1603/4. Anne married second to Dudley Carleton on 02 Nov 1607 (26). Anne died on 18 April 1627 (27). Walter and Anne’s children were:

The Knights of England: Soon after his accession James I. issued orders requiring the sheriffs, etc., to summon all persons possessed of 401. a year to come in and receive the dignity of knighthood. These orders were followed on the 17th July, 1603, by the issue of the usual commission for compounding with all persons who should neglect to comply with the summons. Six days afterwards more than 500 of the persons so summoned attended the King at Whitehall, and there, in the royal garden, were dubbed knights by him.. (24).

The Tredway Case:  In annu secundo Jacobi, upon a diem clausit extremum,  it was found, that Sir Walter Tredway dyed seised of the manor of Dale in the county of Buckinghamshire holden of the King in captite by knights-service; and that Edward Tredway an infant, was his son and heir; in the 13 Jacobi  upon a devenerunt; and that Edward Tredway, after the death of the said Tredway, it is said that he dyed the Kings ward; and that Lettice and Elizabeth are his sisters and coheirs of full age…(29).

The Letters of John Chamberlain: In November, Carleton married Anne, daughter of George Gerrard of Dorney, Buckinghamshire, Step daughter of Sir Henry Savile, Provost of Eton, and widow of Sir Walter Tredway (27).

Parishes: Stoke Poages, Co. Buckinghamshire, England – The Rectory Manor: In 1589 Elizabeth Bowser joined with her husband John Chamberleyn in alienating it (Rectory Manor) to Richard Tredway in liquidation of a debt of £105. Richard’s son Sir Walter Tredway, died seised in 1604, and his widow Anne held the manor by settlement for her life. She married Sir Dudley Carleton, later Viscount Dorchester, in 1607 and died in 1627. Her son Edward Tredway had died in 1615, and the manor reverted to his sisters Lettice and Elizabeth. Elizabeth proved her claim to her half in 1618 and died seised in 1634 (28).

     John Tredway born ca 1550 in England. He married Mrs. Elizabeth Waller Ball on 26 February 1592/3 Co. Buckinghamshire, England (31), the daughter of Edmund Waller and Cecily Ball.   Edmund was the son of Robert Waller and Elizabeth Duncombe. Elizabeth was previously married to Thomas Ball. Elizabeth was listed in her fathers Will dated 1603. John died on 10 May 1610 and is buried in Christ Church, Farringdon Within, London, Co. London, England. John left a Will in 1610, proved 13 June 1610. In that Will he mentioned his wife; Elizabeth, and most of his children (32). At that time John resided in Easton, Myxta, Stamford, Co. Northampton. Elizabeth left a Will in 1640. At that time she was of Ketton, Rutland, England (33). Their children were:

Acts of the Privy Council, of England, Vol 30 – 16 April 1600: Whereas John Tredway of Easton in the countie of Huntingdon(shire), gentleman, having been bound over by a recognizance taken of him by the Sherriffe of the said countie and Sir Anthony Mildemay knight, for his apparance and appeared before her Majesties Privy Counsaile, did enter the same accordinglie and appeared before their Lordships at the daye prefixed by the said Sheriffe and Sir Anthony Mildeman, and hath ever since given his attendance on them. Forasmuche as their Lordships do rest satisfied with the answers which the said Tredway hath made to the matters objected againste him, the have therefore dismissed him from any farther attendance here for the matter with which he is now charged, and given him leave to depart (34).

Parishes – Ketton: Kettlethorpe Hall: In 1599 Richard Stace and Betelina his wife conveyed them (Kettlehorpe Hall) to John Tredway. In the same year, John Tredway settled them on his wife Elizabeth and son Robert. In 1610 John died seised of these manors and his son Robert, who was aged sixteen at his father’s death, had livery of the manors in 1618… in 1636 the manors were held by John’s widow, Elizabeth, and daughter Cecilia (35).

     Humfrey Tredway born Unknown in England. Humfrey became rector in Little Offord, Offord D’Arcy, Co. Huntingdon, England. His Will was dated 20 March 1640/1, proved 18 June 1641. It appears Humfrey died without issue. In his Will he mentions his nephews Francis, Humphrey and Edmund; sons of his “Sister Tredway of Baston (Francis’s wife)”, his Godson’s Richard and William Naylor, nieces Dorothy and Mary Potter daughters of his “Sister Potter” and mention of his “Sister Tredway of Ketton, (Rutlandshire, John’s wife) (36). Humfrey was the author of Latin Verses of Philip Sydney

     Francis Tredway born unknown, England. He married possibly Susanna _____ (Note: the name of Susanna came from son Humphrey’s Will, however Francis was not mentioned in that Will; Humfrey Tredway, Francis’s brother, called her Sister Tredway of Baston along with her children Francis, Humphrey and Edmund). Susanna left a Will dated 30 December 1656 and proved on 23 Jan 1661/2. Susanna was buried on 30 December 1656, Baston, Co. Lincolnshire, England.  I could find no other mention of Francis nor Susanna. Their children were (all listed under Francis’s name in the baptismal records) (41):

   Henry Tredway was born ca 1624/25, Buckinghamshire, England.  He married Mrs. Margaret West Randall.  Margaret was married previously to Nicholas Randall of Hedgerley.  Margaret was born ca 1627, and baptized on 17 Jan 1627, Hedgerley, Co. Buckinghamshire, England, the daughter of John and Joan West.  Both Henry and Margaret were of the Quaker faith.  Henry made his Will in 1680 and it was proved in 1700.  He was buried on 29 July 1700 at Jordans, St. Giles, Chalfont, Co. Buckinghamshire, England.  Margaret made her Will in 1705, and died on 12 June 1706, St. Giles, Chalfont, Co. Buckinghamshire, England.  Henry and Margaret did not have children together.  However, Margaret did have children by her first marriage; one being Sarah Randall who married Thomas Dell.

The Art of Midwifery:  Early Modern Midwives:  In the autumn of 1677 the Quaker Matron Margaret Tredway paid a visit to Elizabeth Crouch at the Quaker girls home in Buckinghamshire… Margaret Tredway also officiated at local Quaker births.  According to the Buckinghamshire Quarterly Meeting birth register, she attended childbirths in the Upperside community for over twenty years…

     Lettice Mary Tredway, born ca 1593, England. Lettice was a nun and educationalist at the Convent of the Canonesses Regular of St. Augustine of Beaulieu near Douai, France (36). She along with Lady Tredway and Lord Abbott Montague started a Convent in Paris, France called Paris House of English Augustinian Canonesses (37). Lady Lettice continued her life long career until 1675; dying in October 1677 (39).

A Historical Dictionary of British Women: Tredway, Lettice Mary, 1593-1677 – Roman Catholic educationalist. Daughter of Sir Walter Tredway of Beckly, Buckinghamshire. Lettice was professed a nun of the Augustinian covenant at Douai in 1615. (39).

     Cecily Tredway born ca 1603 in Easton, Buckinghmshire, England. She was baptized 02 Oct 1603, Easton Co. Buckinghamshire, England. She married Eure aka Evers Armyne on 16 June 1635 at Ketton Cum Tixover, Ketton, Co. Rutland, England (44). Evers was born on 15 February 1599/60 the son of Sir William Armyne and Martha Eure. Evers was a Barrister, a Bencher, a Reader, a JP, and Commissioner in Lincolnshire and for Rutland(shire). Cecily died in November 1677 and was buried on 20 November 1677 (44). Cecily is buried in the St. Peter Churchyard, Lenton, Co. Lincolnshire, England.  Their children were: (45)

In 1610 John died seised of these manors and his son Robert, who was aged sixteen at his father’s death, had livery of the manors in 1618… in 1636 the manors were held by John’s widow, Elizabeth, and daughter Cecilia who settled them on the marriage of Cecilia with Evers Armyn. Evers was an active Parliamentarian, and as ‘Mr. Armyn of Ketton’ had been referred to with his wife Cecilia, on account of his opinions in a report on ecclesiastical matters at Ketton in 1639 and 1640. They had a son and four daughters, one of whom married John Bullingham. Evers and Cecilia were dealing with these manors in 1657. (35).

     Humphrey Tredway born ca 1613, Baston, Co. Lincolnshire, England, and baptized on 23 October 1613, Baston, Co. Lincolnshire, England. He was listed in his uncle Humfrey Tredway’s Will as “Humphrey second sonne of Sister Tredway of Baston”. He married Katherine Lynne, daughter of George Lynne (46). George Lynne was of Southwick, Co. Northamptonshire. Humphrey left a Will dated 13 December 1654 and proved on 12 February 1655. In that Will he names his mother as Susanna (note does not mention father), wife; Katherine, and his children (47). Katherine was the Executrix to Susanna’s Will. Katherine married secondly to a Mr. Butler. Humphrey and Katherine’s children were (46):

He married Amy Smith on 12 June 1650 in Bayford, Hertfordshire, England.  Amy was the daughter of John and Anne Smith. He and his brother Thomas were co-partners of a store in London. John died in 1652 in London, leaving a Will dated 09 April 1652.  His wife Amy mentioned her “brother” (brother in law) John Thorold, and her “brother” (brother in law) Thomas Tredway in her Will also dated 1652. Amy died and was buried 30 August 1652 at St. Andrew Undershaft. London, Co. London, England, next to her husband. It appears that they died without issue.
